Hullum Duke Redwine

Hullum Duke Redwine, farmer, Mississippi and Texas state legislator, and county official, was born in Madison County, Georgia, on May 18, 1809. He was the son of William C. and Malinda Lou (Cox) Redwine. In 1828 he relocated to Hines County, Mississippi, where he married Kessiah Heard on June 24, 1834. This couple had at least three children. One son, Hullum Duke Erasmus Redwine, later served as a field officer in the Civil War.

In the mid-1830s Redwine moved with his family to Newton County, Mississippi. According to A. J. Brown’s History of Newton County from 1834 to 1894 (1894), Redwine served two terms as sheriff of Newton County, but this source also acknowledges that early court records were later lost and his tenure has not been positively verified. In 1839 Redwine relocated to Lafayette County, Mississipi. Here, he was elected to the state legislature in 1841 and married Rachel T. McCord around 1843.

Redwine immigrated to Texas in 1851 and eventually settled in Rusk County in 1852. He engaged in farming and was active in state and local politics. In the late 1850s he was elected chief justice for the county. In 1859 he was elected representative for Rusk County to the Eighth Texas Legislature. He was in the House from November 7, 1859, to November 4, 1861, and co-chaired the Reduction of Expenditures of the State Government Committee. The 1860 census listed Redwine, his wife, and two children living in Rusk County. Redwine died on April 14, 1864, in Rusk County and was buried there at Black Jack Cemetery.
