About Humbert V de Beaujeu, prince de Dombes

"Humbert V de Beaujeu was born about 1199, the oldest son of Guichard V 'le Grand', sire de Beaujeu, and Sibylle of Flanders, who was the sister of Isabelle, wife of King Louis VII of France. From 1216, when his father died, Humbert was lord of Beaujeu.

"On 15 July 1219 Humbert married Marguerite de Beaugé, dame de Miribel. They had a son [and] four daughters of whom Isabelle and Sybille would have progeny.

"In 1226 Humbert took part in the Albigensian Crusade as a follower of Louis VIII, king of France, and after it he was named senechal of Carcassone. After the king's death, his widow Blanche of Castile, the regent, named Humbert leader of the crusade, and he conquered the fortress of Bessade, defended by the famed Cathar knight Oliver de Termes.

"In 1239 Humbert accompanied his cousin Bauduoin II de Courtenay, the emperor, on his return to Constantinople, and in the same year he was named Constable of France.

"He took part in the sixth Crusade in Egypt under Louis IX, king of France, where he was captured with his king. After his release he accompanied the king to Palestine, where he died at Acre on 25 July 1250."
