Humphrey Barrett settled in Concord in 1639 ; admitted a freeman, May 6, 1657. It is supposed that he came from the county of Kent, England. There came with him a wife and three sons, John, Thomas, and Humphrey, Jr. Respecting the son John, it is not definitely known where he settled. Shattuck supposes him to have been of Marlboro. The records of probate, however, show that John Barrett of Marlboro had a brother William Barrett of Cambridge, and Thomas Barrett of Marlboro, formerly of Cambridge.
Thomas Barrett, here mentioned, in his will, Jan. 16, 1672, made a little before his death, names brothers John and William, and a sister Lydia Cheever. As Humphrey, Sr., had a son Thomas, who was drowned in the North River at Concord, in 1652, leaving a son Oliver, who died in 1671, and a daughter Mary, who married James Smedley, both of these children being mentioned in the wills of Humphrey Barrett and his wife Mary Barrett as their grandchildren, it therefore follows that John Barrett of Marlboro was not a son of Humphrey Barrett of Concord.
Humphrey Barrett's farm was some three hundred acres or more ; his house-lot of twelve acres was near the centre of the town. The old house was on what is now known as Monument Street.

descent

From Concord Public Library, BARRETT FAMILY PROPERTY AND FINANCIAL PAPERS, 1734-1860 link

The Barretts were established in Concord with the arrival of Humphrey Barrett and his wife Mary from England around 1640. His son Humphrey (b. 1630) left two sons, Joseph and Benjamin, at his death in 1715. Joseph’s descendents included a son, John, and a great-grandson, Joel. Benjamin had eight children, including Thomas and James. Thomas (1707-1779) was a farmer who later became a church deacon. Col. James Barrett (1710-1779) served as Concord’s representative to the General Court in Boston from 1768-1777, and was a well-known Revolutionary leader in Concord. Thomas’s son Samuel (1749-1804) continued to acquire land in Concord (while brothers Charles and Amos left Concord for other towns), and Samuel’s son Samuel Barrett (1773-1825) had a gristmill in Concord – hence the present-day "Barretts Mill Road". One of Col. James Barrett’s sons, Nathan (1735-1791), had many children, including Nathan, Ephraim, Susanna and William. Stephen (1750-1829), another of Col. James Barrett’s sons, was the father of Sally and Cyrus Barrett. (2)
