Bilander Thistle
Those interested in the arrival of certain 'Hunsuckers' at Philadelphia 28 Oct 1738 "in the Bilander Thistle" from Rotterdam may like to know that a "Bilander" was a CLASS of sailing vessel, a small two mastted cargo ship used along the coasts and canals of Holland. Thanks to http://www.onelook.com

List of foreigners imported in the Bilander, Thistle, Geo. Houston, Commander, from Rotterdam, last from Cowes. Forty-two men, thirty-six boys, sixty-four women and girls - in al 142. Qualified Oct. 28, 1738.
Columns represent Passenger Name Alt. Spelling/ Name Age
Abraham Sr.
After his son, Abraham Jr., fought in the Revolutionary War registering in Burke County NC, Abraham Sr. migrated to Virginia.
Strassburger "Pennsylvania German Pioneers" (I:240) shows on a list of Palatines aboard the ship "Bilander Thistle" of Philadelphia, George Houston, Commander, from Rotterdam, arriving at Philadelphia November 3, 1738, the following names: men: Peter Honshokker, (age) 53, Abraham Honshooker age. 23, 3 women: Creeta Honshooker, 18.
Peter and his sons settled in Lancaster PA although they do not appear in the Lancaster County deed abstracts that are available to me. (Jonathan Butcher, professional researcher NC.)
The Pennsylvania German Society, "Records of Pastoral Acts at the Lutheran and Reformed Congregations of the Muddy Creek church, East Cocallicao Township, Lancaster County, PA, 1730-1790" shows that one of the founders of the Reformed Congregation, May 19 1743 was Peter Huntziger.
We find a Simon Hunsicker, who with wife Eva Rosina, had a daughter Maria Dorothy born September 28, 1746 and a son Francis baptized January 1, 1752.
Abraham Huntziger is first mentioned on January 1, 1745 as Godfather for the baptism of Abraham, son of Henry and Anna-Maria Haller. Abraham Hunsicker and wife had a son John baptized their May 29, 1751, with John Ochs Godfather , and another son (not named) baptized August 2, 1752, with Abraham Kern and wife as Godparents.
This Abraham Sr., was probably also the father of Abraham Hunsucker who was a Revolutionary War Pensioner from Washington County PA. The latter stated that he was born about 1754 in Lancaster Pa, and that when he was very young his father moved to the Shenandoah County VA then onto Deep River in Cumberland County, NC.
Abraham Hunsucker Sr. had a grant of 200 acres in Cumberland County Sight of Deep River on December 11, 1770. He likely arrived a few years after John. He and his wife, Katherine sold this tract to George Harenger on September 19, 1775 (Cumberland County Court records burned).
The 1790 Census of Burke then lists Abram. Hunsucker, Abram. Hunsucker Jr., and Jno Hunsucker. Abraham Jr., was evidently the revolutionary pensioner, born 1754, while this John was apparently the son of Abraham Sr., who was born in 1751.
In 1800 we find in Burke two John’s and Peter all aged 26-45 (probably an error in age in the case of one John.) Abraham Sr. has apparently died in Burke Co. somewhere.
In 1810 in Burke County, George and John Hunsucker appear, the former perhaps John’s son and the one who married in 1804 Sarah Grindstaff.
Only John appears in the Burke County Census of 1820 and none thereafter, but George might be the George Hunsucker found in Hawkins County, TN in 1830, and aged 50-60. This branch of the family may have been the origin of some of those other Hunsucker’s found in Marshall County MS.
Land Records
Found some more information in the Abraham folder, there were a few Abraham's running around in NC:
In 1856 Treasury Dept. reported that last payment of his pension was made 9/4/1833 at the VA agency office of the Sec. of the Comm. of VA. June 1946 "only reference under name Hunsaker 1779-1803 index of land Grants is record of grant for 100 acres in Washington Co. VA issued to Abraham Hunsucker the18th of Oct. 1800." Sept. 13, 1813 Abraham HUNTSUCCOR and Elizabeth hiswife of Wash. Co. VA sold 100 acres to Susannah. Grant property lies onAbraham's Creek, a South branch of property of Elijah GREEN.
Wit: GeorgeE. GOFF, William GRANT, Joseph H. GRANT.
From: Clerk's office in Wash. Co., VA. Abraham HUNSAKER and Elizabeth hiswife sold 110 acres for $300.00 19 Oct 1813.

named Mary Snyder (#2)who resided at one time in Washington County Virginia and moved to Union County
Illinois about 1803 and died at Jonesboro, the same county Jan 6, 1834. (she is talking about Abraham who descended
from Hartman HUNSUCKER, DAR records proved that the two Abraham's were of different lines.)

Barbara HUNSUCKER b. abt. 1770 married Henry GABBERT b. 1768 VA, d. bef. 1854 Owsley Co., KY.
They had a son named Peter who gives his birth place as Burke Co. NC. They can be placed in Washington
Co. VA c.1806-1814 from deed records. They migrated from VA to KY. This person suggests that Barbara
was the daughter of Abraham & Katherine HUNSUCKER. Notice that in 1810, Census of VA below, Abraham,
John & Peter are listed! If Peter was the brother of Barbara HUNSUCKER GABBARD, it is not unusual to name
the children after the siblings. (See Naming Customs of the Germans)

ENTER, YET ANOTHER ABRAHAM HUNSUCKER, now this one was just 8 years younger than the Abraham who
was a Rev. War Patriot.....he was living in 1790 and probably married by this time according to his age but
where was he?.......PA perhaps, there was an Abraham there!
Abraham Hunsucker age 88, is listed on the 1850 Washington Co., Va census with
his wife Barbara, age 91. Both are listed as being born in NC. They have several younger Hunsucker's living in

I am inquiring about your Hunsucker Family tree.
My 2nd gg grandfather, James Hunsucker was born 1802 in either NC or SC
(county unknown, but I think it was around Guilford County, NC) married a
Barbara born 1807. James and Barbara had three and perhaps four children--
Do you have any knowledge about Isaac and his wife Susan? What was Susan's maiden name? Did they have any children?
Who did Henry Hunsucker marry and date and place of his death and burial?
Thank you for your time and assistance on this important subject.
You can reply to my e-mail address at: cher27@naxs.com

The author has recently received a copy of Abraham Huntsucker’s (b 1754) Revolutionary War Pension Application file. The National Archives maynot always send exactly the same information with each request. The author received a cover page, a page in book E, volume 6, page 12; a case brief; a two page affidavit by Abraham Huntsucker Jr, and a May 22, 1938 letter to Mrs R. Z. Matthews McClure from A. D. Hiller, an assistant to Administrator. The word brother is never mentioned in the material that the author was sent. John Huntsucker is mentioned twice. After Abraham gives his deposition and signs it, this phrase appears "and the said court do hereby declare their opinion after the investigation of the matter and after hearing the affidavits of John Hunsucker and John Smith two credible witnesses that the said applicant was a Revolutionary soldier as he states and served the time set forth in the declaration".
On the 1938 typed letter to Mrs McClure, there is a vertical notation in pencil that appears to read "Aug 1832". In pencil between the body of the letter and the salutation is written "John Huntsucker of Scott Co. made affidavit regarding above". Previous researchers have assumed that this was Abraham Huntsucker’s brother John Huntsucker (b 1751). We now know that Abraham’s brothers John (b 1751) and Peter (b 1765-1770) are in Missouri in 1830 and could not have given an affidavit in Scott County in August of 1832.
This John Smith known as "John "Dutch" Smith" is my G,G Grandfather. He was From Burke Co N.C. and fought at the battle of Cowpens with the Huntsuckers. There is a close connection between John "Dutch" and the Huntsuckers but I am unable to make a connection. I have long believed he may have married a Huntsucker
