SSN: 169-22-8703
Likely connection to Prussoff clan, from Druya or Vitebsk in Belarus (given that he lists Druya/Droya as a birthplace on one of his records, that seems to be a good possibility, as that's a small town in the Vitebsk region).
Wife Minnie from Vitesbk
Vitebsk also appears associated with Prussoff clan
Hilda reportedly named for some person as Morty's brother (Harry?)
Also interesting: lodger with Hyman and Minnie in 1920 is Morris Rubenstein. A Theodore Rubenstein married one of the Prussoff siblings
Theory needed to be proved: Hyman's the first cousin of the 7 Prussoff siblings, through his mother's side.
Seemed to arrive 1911 and married Minnie in 1912.
Likely spellings of his name pre-Anglicization are Kasares or Kosares.
Note on naturalization; Hyman's WWI draft card does not indicate his citizenship status one way or another, as it should. Sadly, that line is blank. However, we do know that when/if Hyman was officially naturalized, it was after 1930. On the 1920 census, he is still listed as an alien ("AL"), and on the 1930 census, it indicates that he has filed papers ("PA") to become a citizen. At that time, all naturalizations went through the federal court's US Eastern District of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia (as opposed to the state- or county-level courts). But here's the hitch: By 1940, the census again has "AL" by his and Minnie's names, so he may never have completed the naturalization process. If he didn't, it would have been difficult to get Social Security (if he lived long enough to apply for it). (via researcher Rachel Silverman)
Via Dmitry Pruss (related to Prussoff clan): "Kozarez is a butcher specializing in goatmeat, and it's a Druya surname. Medvedev by the way isn't from Druya proper, but from the neighboring Drissa county, some 60 miles further upriver from Druya, making it even less likely that there is a Prussoff connection on that side."
