About Hyman Zadek Salomon
Hyman Zadek Salomon (1832-1897) was the younger brother of Fred Zadek Salomon. He helped him establish the first grocery in Denver, and was responsible for importing all the supplies.
"In 1859, Hyman Z. Salomon and a partner opened a company branch at South Park near the Continental Divide in the Tarryall diggings"(United States Jewry, 1776-1985, Jacob Marcus, p. 147-148). There Hyman formed a debating society, the Tarryall Lyceum.
Hyman was known as “a jovial man who loved to make people laugh with humorous anecdotes” (The Mystery of the Dislocated Grave, University of Denver Magazine, January. 15, 2009). He was proud of his Judaism and in 1865 he wrote a strong letter in the Rocky Mountain News against the governor who had claimed that Thanksgiving was a Christian holiday (ibid).
