b) IOANNES Komnenos Batatzes (-1182). The primary source which confirms his parentage has not yet been identified. Megas domestikos. Niketas Choniates names "magnus domesticus Ioannes Comnenus, cognomento Batatzes"[109]. He was appointed strategos (governor) of Thrace. An undated seal records “Jean Vatatsès protospathaire et stratège”[110]. He died during the rebellion against Emperor Andronikos I.

Ioannes & his wife had two children:
John (c. 1132–1185), the megas domestikos, who won a notable victory over the Seljuk Turks (Battle of Hyelion and Leimocheir) and later rebelled against Andronikos I Komnenos.[6]
