Peter was a Lower Brule Sioux man from the Rosebud Reservation

The Lower Brule Sioux Tribe (Kul Wicasa Oyate) is a sovereign nation that signed treaties with the federal government in 1824, 1851, 1865, and 1868. These treaties established the tribe's boundaries and recognized the tribe's sovereignty.

Biography:
Born c. 1860 to Sioux parents probably on the Rosebud Reservation as both are listed in the 1900 census as being born in South Dakota, Peter married Mary reportedly in 1871 (probably later) which would be quite young. Mary had three children from a previous marriage who lived with her and Peter and one male child.

Under the Indian Appropriations Act of June 7, 1897, there was further negotiation and an "agreement with certain Indians " on March 10, 1898, with the U.S. Indian Inspector James McLaughlin, providing four articles of further detailed negotiations regarding the removal of Indians to the Rosebud Reservation. Peter Greenwood was signator #305 to that agreement. (See; 55th Congress 2nd Session House of Representatives Document No. 447)

According to the 1900 census, Peter was living alone by then.

According to Carla Joinson in her book Vanished in Hiawatha, Peter was admitted to the Canton Asylum suffering from syphilitic dementia (Syphilitic dementia, also known as general paresis, is a severe neuropsychiatric disorder caused by late-stage syphilis. Syphilis is a multisystem chronic infection caused by treponema pallidum. It can cause psychiatric disorders including depression, mania, psychosis, personality changes, delirium, and dementia.)

Per the letter dated February 23, 1934, from Dr. L.L. Culp to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, Peter died on September 22, 1903, and was buried in the Canton Hiawatha Cemetery in tier 4 plot 41.

His profile is part of the The Canton Asylum One Place Study.
