"John the Second Boswell was born in Gloucester CO., VA to John nd Phebe Iverson Boswell. He was baptized in the Abington Parish on 5 March 1692. Little is known of John's early years; he grew up on are Point with two younger brothers and two younger sisters. There could have been more children, but these are all that are recorded in he Abington Parish Register.

"About 1728, John the Second married a Ware Point neighbor, Ann Ransom. There is some mystery as to where John spent the next ten years. The existing copies of the early Abington Parish Register 1678-1762 do not contain the marriage or birth of their children. The early county records of Gloucester Co. and those of Hanover Co. were destroyed. Nowhere has John the Second been found until he purchases land in 1740."

In Spotsylvania Co., Deed Book C-151, 30 April, 1740, Joseph Brock and his wife Mary, sell to John Boswell, Planter, for 100 pounds, 980 acres in Spotsylvania Co. This was part of Larkin Chew's patent of 4 June 1722. Joseph Brock was Chew's son-in-law and bought land from Chew for resale. The land in the 1722 patents was near the Po and Ta Rivers, about fifteen miles south of Fredericksburg.

"No where is the exact death date of John Boswell the Second clearly stated, John had a will (Spotsylvania Co., Will Book A-321) which bears a date of 10 Jan 1740. Annexed to the will is a deposition by Wm. Bicknell. John sent for Bicknell to write his will on 9 Jan (no year stated). This deposition was sworn in court on 7 April 1741. One of the statements in the deposition: "Boswell was in perfect sense and memory to the last of this Deponent's knowledge and belief that before he could get witnesses to see him publish the same as his last will and testament he was taken senseless and further this Deponents sayeth not."

"Ann Boswell presented the will and deposition to the Court on May 5, 1741.

"The fact that John Boswell recorded a deed (Deed Book C-151) on 6 May 1740, attests that he was alive on that date. From the deposition of Wm. Bicknell, it sounds as though John Boswell expired shortly after signing his will on 10 January 1740. However, the deed book entry of the date is written 1740, with an underscore of the zero.

BOSWELL, JOHN, St. George's Parish, d. Jan. 10, 1740, p. May 5, 1741. Proved on the oath of William Bicknell, who wrote the said will for the said John Boswell. Ex. wife Ann Boswell. Leg. eldest daughter Dorothy; youngest Frances; sons Ransom, George and James Boswell, 980 acres of land to be equally divided among the above named children; my younger children to be educated. I desire that the Court may bind my three eldest sons when they arrive at the age of fifteen years to the following trades, Ransom and John Boswell to a Joyner and Carpenter and George Boswell to a Blacksmith.
