Ian Gillies (1955 - 2005)

Brief overview:

Ian (50), well-known owner of Giles restaurant in Craighall Park, was fatally stabbed in the heart and chest at his restaurant on 5th December 2005. Ian was stabbed more than 20 times.

Insp. Gabriel Hall, investigating officer, testified earlier that the office where Gillies' body was found was full of blood and sneaker prints.

Enock Biri Moyo, head chef of the Giles restaurant, recognised the prints as Mongameli Ndebele's (24), sneakers. Ndebele was a Zimbabwean National.

Those shoes, Ians' mobile phone and R5000 were later found in Ndebele's apartment in Joubert Park.

  • On 5th March 2007 Judge Frans Malan said Ndebele's testimony was insufficient and highly improbable. "The accused's testimony was naive and therefore cannot be believed."
  • Adv. Anton Lerm, Ndebele's legal representative, asked for sentencing to take place on 19th March 2007 as a probation officer must testify for extenuating circumstances for Ndebele.

"The late Ian Baldwin Gillies and Jennifer Gillies opened Giles in 1994 and subsequent to Ian’s death in 2005, the running and management was taken over by his two children; Ben and Kiarin.

The pub and restaurant was named after the famous British Comic ‘Giles’ and a word play on the family surname.

The idea of Giles was premised on a good ol’ English pub, where the community came to enjoy each other’s company with good food and their favourite lager.

On the 1st of June 2018, the pub was sold. The new owners most of them regulars at the restaurant decided that they could not let Giles close down and purchased the pub, with that has come some changes. The Giles pub area will keep the name Giles Pub, however the restaurant will have its own entrance and be managed by the famous Founders Grill family from Florida."
