Ignatius van Rooyen (1953 - 2001)

Brief overview:

Ignatius (43), who lived with his father on the farm Rietkuil, in separate houses, was shot and died, on 16th July 2001. He sustained two gunshot woulds, one to the lower chest and one to the abdomen.

Two perpetrators had set up an ambush at the gate to the farmyard. When Ignatius climbed out of his truck to open the gate around 17:00 and was shot with the shotgun. He jumped back into the bakkie, heavily wounded, and raced through the gate, made a u-turn and drove out again at high speed, to try and get help. The attackers fled. Ignatius drove another hundred metres and succumbed to his injuries.

Captain Annelie van der Bank said a farm worker found him in his bakkie with the engine still running. about 200 metres from his house at 07:00. Emergency services were called to the scene and he was pronounced dead.

Van der Bank said preliminary investigations suggested that a shotgun was used in the murder, and appeared he was shot outside his bakkie at the gate to his farm yard. He then got into the car and sped off, most probably to escape his attackers, and drove through a fence before the vehicle stopped. Various police units, farmers, members of the local commando as well as emergency and disaster management are searching for the killers.
