https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ignatz_Gr%C3%BCnfeld

Ignatz (Izaak) Grünfeld (born January 11, 1825 in Sorau (Zory), died December 27, 1894 in Kattowitz ( Katowice ) - German architect , master and contractor, founder of the Ignatz Grünfeld Baugeschäft company, operating in the second half of the 19th century in Kattowitz and adjacent cities of the industrial area . A long-time member of the Kattowitz City Council .

Grünfeld's ancestors come from an old Jewish family associated with Iglawa in Moravia , engaged in trade. The Grünfelds had to leave the Moravia in the second half of the 18th century, when in the then Austria Empress Maria Teresa introduced anti-Jewish legislation. The family moved to Woschczytz (now Woszczyce) in eastern Upper Silesia, then a village located in Prussia (today part of Orzesze in the Mikołów powiat ). In 1817, the leather trader Hirschel Grünfeld moved from Woszczyce to Żory, where Izaak - Ignatz came into the world. Activity in Katowice.

It is not known who and when Ignatz Grünfeld was appointing. It is known, however, that he began his career with the position of a simple bricklayer. He worked on construction sites in Gleiwitz, Stettin & Breslau (Gliwice , Szczecin and Wrocław) . He took part in the construction of the dome on the church of St. Nicholas in Potsdam . He arrived in Katowice in 1855, at a time when the then industrial village was undergoing rapid transformation and modernization, the next stage of which was to give city rights to Katowice in 1865.

In Katowice construction documents his name appears for the first time in 1877. He appears there as a construction master who built a tenement house for the entrepreneur Abraham (Simon) Goldstein . Today in the building at Warszawska 5 there is a " Kryształowa" cafe .

In total, his company designed and built several dozen of the most representative buildings in Katowice and surrounding cities, including the old and new Katowice synagogue as well as the Grand Hotel building at the former Schlossstrasse [1] . His company had its own clay excavation and a brickyard in the then settlement of Karbowa, a town of Podkatowice. The elevations of the buildings erected by him were characterized by an extremely rich Art Nouveau decoration.

From the moment Katowice was granted city rights until his death Grünfeld sat on the City Council. He died in 1894, he was buried in the Jewish cemetery at today's Kozielska Street. He had six sons, two of whom ( Hugo Grünfeld and Max Grünfeld ) continued his profession and developed business. Traces in today's Katowice Edit
