About Irene Hultgren

Irene Nilsen Hultgren passed away into the loving presence of her Savior on November 15, 2001. She was born to Arthur and Helga Nilsen in Gig Harbor on February 25, 1937. She attended Peninsula High School and Pacific Lutheran University, graduating with a B.S. in the School of Nursing in 1959. She was an accomplished violinist and concertmistress in the PLU orchestra. Perhaps her greatest pride, in addition to her 20 years of nursing at Tacoma General and Mary Bridge, was in the varied professional accomplishments of her four children, followed closely by the love and affection for her devoted husband of 18 years. Irene's greatest interest in recent years was in the Irene Hultgren Scholarship Nursing Fund at PLU, established by her husband, and the Ken and Irene Hultgren Scholarship Fund at Life Christian School & Academy. This fund was established so students in need could experience quality education in a Christian context. In lieu of flowers, donations to these funds would please her. In closing, perhaps the greatest tribute a person could receive was given her by a child while she was a nurse at Mary Bridge Children's Hospital. He had been badly injured and completely bandaged. It was Irene's day off and when the substitute nurse introduced herself, the young patient said, "No! You're not my nurse!" After several assurances that she was, he said no, "I want the nurse that works for God." I guess that says it. If Irene were to write this obituary, we suspect she would say, "In whatever you do, if God is in it, good! Without Him it's not worth the effort." Like the apostle Paul said, she "fought a good fight and kept the faith, therefore there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness." "No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the Continent, a part of the mainÉ. Any man's death diminishes me because I am involved in Mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee." - John Donne's "Devotions"
