About Irene Shelden
She grew up on the family farm, where her father grew corn, other crops and had a few animals. The family moved around during Irene's childhood, living in Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas. Irene graduated from high school, a lifelong dream, in 1922 at the age of 21.
Irene married her childhood friend, Claire Edgar Shelden in June 1923 in Dalhart, Texas. They rented a three-room house in the country. Claire was a teacher at the country school, and Irene was a homemaker.
Irene enjoyed many hobbies, such as sewing, quilting, textile painting, gardening and preserving the vegetables from her garden. She enjoyed playing dominoes with her friends. She also loved reading and crossword puzzles. She drove her own car until the age of 90. She lived in her own apartment until her 100th birthday.
Irene was a member of the First Christian Church in Fort Collins. For many years she taught the Adult Bible Class and was the chairwoman for the outreach program. She was active in the Christian Women's Fellowship and the Panty Parlor (handmade lingerie for those in need).
Irene's philosophy, "Life is not worth moping around -- honor the Lord in all you do."
