Isaac Farmer, Son of Thomas Farmer and Agnes Nicholson

Isaac Farmer married Elizabeth Bryant Braswell, daughter of Richard B raswell and Elizabeth Bryant about 1741, Edgecombe County, North Caroli na. The Braswells and Bryants are discussed in more detail in the sect ion entitled "Braswell-Bryant Families". The first records that the au thor has found pertaining to Isaac Farmer appear in 1744. Excerpts con cerning Isaac Farmer from Edgecombe County Court Minutes, 1744 thru 176 2, Book I, (Fee Docket 1745-1746 EdgecombeCounty, Northampton County, ( Crown Docket 1755-1763), Edgecombe County, abstracted by Weynette Parks H aun, 1985, are shown below. Feb. 20, 1744 "[10] IsaacFarmer ordered to assist work & clear main ro ad from Mr. Blounts to the Tarr River Road Vizt". Aug. 1745 "[50] Ordd that Wm. Merict be and he is hereby appointed Over seer of the Road in the room of John Whitaker & that all the hands from t he mouth of the Caney branch to the Mill & form thence to Deep Creek Br idge& from Isaac Farmers to Archibald Stinson . . ."

Godwins Bridge on Tosenott Swam p into Dews Road near Dew Mill towit". In Haun's abstracts from Edgec ombe County, North Carolina Court Minutes, 1763 thru 1774, Book II, 198 9, the author found additional entries concerning Isaac Farmer: in Jan uary 1768, "[177] Isaac Farmer Overseer of the Road in the Room of Nath l. Hickman"; in February 1770, "[246] Robert Rogers Overseer of the Ro adin the Room of Isaac Farmer"; and "[248] A Deed of Sale from Isaac F armer to Isaac Farmer, Jr. acknowledged".

1. Thomas Farmer was born about 1742. He died 1785, EdgecombeCounty, N orth Carolina. An abstract of his will is as follows: "Nov. 16, 1784 . Probate Date, 1785. Sons: Thomas, 128 A(cres) plantation whereon I l ive;Joseph, 250 A(cres) (This being newly entered); sons & excrs: Jes se, 250 A(cres) (This being newly entered), and Joshua. Wit: Joshua F armer, Aziel Barnes, Daniel Highsmith."

2. Lucy Farmer was born about 1744. She married Zachariah Lee 11 Octo ber 1763, Edgecombe County, North Carolina.**

3. JesseFarmer was born about 1746; he died 1812, Edgecombe County. H e was a Quaker.His will is as follows: "July 9, 1808. Aug. Ct., 1812. B ook E, p. 38. Wife(not named), lend 1/3 plantation, 4 slaves, all stoc k, furniture, utensils; reversion to son and exr: Joseph, also remaind er estate. Exr: Charles Coleman. Wit: none. Proved in Ct., by oaths o f Frederick Cotten, Spencer S. Hart."*

7. Samuel Farmer was born about 1754; he died 1816, Edgecombe County, N orth Carolina. He married Jerusha ____. An abstract of his will is a s follows: "May 21, 1814. Apr. Ct., 1817. Bk. E,p. 158. Wife: Jeru sha, plantation whereon I live, remainder of slaves. Son & Exr: Samue l, 1 slave, $100; dau: Rhoda, 1 slave; son & exr: Moses, 1 slave, lan d on Miry Swamp known as Parish Place; dau: Ann Sharp, 1 slave; son: I saac, 1 slave, plantation whereon I live after his mother's death. Wit : ___ Farmer, Isaac Farmer."*

Their childr en were: 1) William D.; 2) Braswell married Nancy White, died 1827 Law rence County, Tennessee; 3) Moses; 4) Arthur D.; 5) Sarah "Sally" marr ied Mr.Hollowell; 6) Absolom; 7) Dew died after 1827; 8) Jacob; 9) Bed dy married Mr.White; 10) Nancy married Mr. Dew; 11) Elizabeth married M r. Native of Virginia. Son of Thomas Farmer and Agnes Nicholson.

Hugh B. Johnston Jr., author and genealogist, was a descendant of Isaac Farmer. He was a local historian and newspaper columnist for decades. He published a lengthy book on the Johnston family but left unpublished manuscripts on the Farmer, Barnes, Thomas, and numerous other families.

From records of Hugh B. Johnston Jr.: Isaac Farmer was the son of Thomas Farmer and Agnes Nicholson. Isaac Farmer Sr. married ELIZABETH BRASWELL 1741 in Halifax County, NC (Southeastern Part). She died 1770.

Isaac Farmer purchased land from James Farmer adjoining Nicholas Porter's on Deep Creek. He later patented another 268 acres adjoining his original 120 acres. For some unknown reason, in 1760, Isaac Farmer was living in Halifax County and sold his lands in Edgecombe County. In 1761, he returned to Edgecombe County, purchasing 200 acres on Toisnot (Tosneant) Swamp in lower Edgecombe County. On February 25, 1770, shortly before his death, he deeded this land to his son, Isaac Farmer, Jr. He is buried in corner of the woods and up from Toisnot swamp. His home stood 3 to 4 hundred feet east of the graveyard.
