Isaac Goodnight was the son of John (Hans) Michael Goodnight & Mary (Landis) Landers. He was born 4 mos after his father died Sept. 1, 1781, in an Indian Attack near Harlan's Station, KY. His mother was found 2 days later in the woods. A family story passed down says that Isaac never went to sleep without something pulled over his head.

Isaac was a boy of great vigor and while yet a boy he became one of the most famous Indian fighters in KY. He was bound to William Hays at the age of 16 to learn the trade of a saddler at Standford in Lincoln Co., KY; at the age of 21, he became a professor of religion under the preaching of Rev. William Finley.

He was married 4 times: (1) Elizabeth McMurray (10 children): Catherine, James W., Abraham, Mary "Polly," Christina, Thomas McMurray, Elizabeth, Sarah B., Nancy R. and Rachel Ann; (2) Mary Ground (5 children): Martha, Isaac Shelby, Jacob, Henry G., and Robert; (3) Rhoda Gadberry (no children) & (4) Frances Dickerson (no children).
