About Isaac Moses Heilbut

The holy name of the father of Joseph is known from his tombstone: Yitschak. His father belongs to the second generation of Heilbuts in Hamburg, leaving only one Isaac as candidate for being his father. The Memorbuch is the source for his holy name.

Isaac Heilbut is no. 9 on the oldest list of Jewish inhabitants of Hamburg, appearing immediately after after Philip Heilbut, who is no. 8. They are the only two Heilbut households on the list, which dates from 1638 (see Jona Schellekens, Dating the oldest list of Jewish inhabitants in Altona and Hamburg, Stammbaum 30 (2006), pp. 20-21). Isaac was married to a woman called Hannchen by Grunwald. Max Grunwald, Hamburgs Deutsche Juden bis zur Auflösung der Dreigemeinden 1811 (Hamburg: Alfred Janssen, 1904), p. 260, lists her as “Hannchen, Fr. Is [Heilbut]”, buried Altona 1676. It is not known whether she was his only wife. Therefore we don't know whether she is the mother of his son Joseph. The Memorbuch mentions Isaac and his wife Hintchen.
