In this June 24, 1827 letter, Belle Grove's Ann Hite encourages her son Isaac Fontaine Hite to behave virtuously at Fourth of July dinner at UVA and scolds him on the cost of the party.

"You say my dear Isaac you are to have a splendid dinner on the fourth of July. I think as you obtained permission with so much difficulty [that] it would be highly commendable and politic in the students to show the professors and etc. that you can acquit yourselves on the occasion with honor to yourselves and friends.

By conducting yourselves with propriety and not into an excess you will show yourselves worthy of the liberty granted you both by them and your Country.

I think one half of the money would have furnished a dinner sufficiently elegant and excellent for the occasion particularly in such a place as Charlottesville. It does not redound to the honor of a country to spend large sums of money in feasting a few; where there are thousands that suffer for the necessaries of life.

Half the money applied to real acts of charity would accord more with the genuine spirit of republican independence; it would evince that records, actions, and feelings, were in unison. And that while enjoying the privileges and blessings so liberally bestowed; the American is not unmindful of his needy fellow citizens.

I shall my dear son be very anxious to hear the conclusion of this great dinner."
