About Isaac (Itzhak) Gust
Itzhak Gutstadt was born into an orthodox Jewish family in Radom, Poland, in 1898, but rejected religious observance at the age of thirteen. When his family was sent to Russia during the First World War, Itzhak felt accepted for the first time and embraced socialism.
Feeling alienated on his return to Poland, Itzhak journeyed first to Palestine, then to Brussels and finally to Melbourne. Passionate faith in socialist politics took him back to the Soviet Union in the 1930s and defined his activities and friendships in Melbourne.
