Sept. 13, 1652. It is assented that Isaac Sheldon and Samuel Kockwell shall keep house together in the house that is Isaac's, so they carry themselves soberly, and do not entertain idle persons, to the evil expense of time by night or day.">

In explanation of the above, it may be said that the statutes of our fathers for the prevention of vice were many. The family was next in sacredness to the church. Every newly-wedded couple was expected to set up a home, and at once to enter upon household duties. In good old Colonial days, the young husband could not lounge away his evenings smoking at his club, while his bride dawdled away hers in the petty gossip of boarding-house parlors; and married persons of either sex, remaining long in the colony without their respective partners, were made to send for them, or were themselves ordered back to England as disreputable. No inhabitant was admitted unless approved by the town, and every householder was called to strict account for his visitors, and made answerable for their good conduct and solvency.

[p.161] In Windsor, "no master of a family" might "give habitation or eutertainment to any young man to sojourn in his family, but by the allowance of the town," and "no young man that had not a servant, or was not a public officer, might keep house by himself without permission from the town under a penalty of twenty shillings a week." Wherefore, in 1652, his father being dead, Isaac Sheldon, Junior, then about twenty-three years of age, obtained permission to live on the homestead, and to take as his companion, Samuel Rockwell, a son of one of the early settlers also deceased. The arrangement was of short duration, for Isaac having married Mary Woodford in 1653, sold out to Rockwell the same year, and with his wife and infant daughter, removed to Northampton, among the first settlers of that town.

Isaac and Mary Woodford Sheldon were blessed with thirteen children. John Sheldon of Deerfield, their second son and third child, was born in Northampton, Dee. 5, 1658.

After Mary's death, Isaac remarried in 1686, Mehitabel (Gunn) Ensign at Northampton. She was the daughter of Thomas Gunn, born in Windsor, Conn. on 28 July 1644. She had first married David Ensign on 22 October 1663, but divorced him in October of 1682 "because of his misconduct". She had five children by Ensign.

The last civil appointment we have for Isaac Sheldon was as overseer of the poor, on 7 Mar 1698.

Isaac Sheldon died 27 July 1708 (at age 78 years) and is buried at the Bridge Street Cemetery, Northampton, Massachusetts. Photos of Sheldon Gravestones [not ready yet] in Northampton, Mass. (July 2002) by gambler15@webtv.net.

Since his will is signed with his mark, we also know that he was unschooled.

Mehitable (Gunn Ensign) Sheldon died 30 Jan 1720/21 also at Northampton.

The records show that Isaac had 14 children and 115 grandchildren. In view of this good beginning, the numerical strength of this branch of the family through all generations is not surprising.

I cannot determine the date of his arrival in the new world, or the ship.

Isaac SHELDON was born in 1629 in England. He died on 27 Jul 1708 in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts. Isaac SHELDON and Mary WOODFORD were married on 17 Apr 1652 (1653?) in Windsor, Connecticut. Mary WOODFORD (daughter of Thomas WOODFORD and Mary BLOTT) was born on 4 Jan 1636 in Windsor, Connecticut. She died on 17 Apr 1684 in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts.

Isaac and Mary Sheldon are ancestors of Harriet Beecher Stowe, Bess Truman, Charles Alden Black (husband of Shirley Temple), Humphrey Bogart, and Franklin Roosevelt.

In the Windsor town records of 13 September, 1652, "It is assented that Isaac Sheldon and Samuel Rockwell shall keep house together in the house that is Isaac's, so they carry themselves soberly, and do not entertain idle persons, to the evil expense of time by night or day." His bachelor companion was a son of Deacon William Rockwell, whose widow became the second wife of Matthew Grant, the emigrant ancestor of General Grant, late President of the United States. The following year Mr. Sheldon married, and shortly afterward removed to Northampton, among the first settlers of that town, and became one of its first board of selectmen in 1656. In 1671 he was one of the projectors of the settlement at Squakeag, later known as Northfield. He died at Northampton 27 July, 1708. He married at Windsor, 1653, Mary, daughter of Thomas and Mary (Blott) Woodford.* She died 17 April, 1684. He married (2) 1685, Mrs. Mehitable Ensign, born 28 July, 1644; died 30 January, 1720; daughter of Thomas Gunn.
