"Other experiments in settlement schemes about this time were those of James Gosling and of Peter Tait. ... In the same year [1818] Peter Tait, after applying unsuccessfully for Government assistance for his scheme, sailed from Scotland with seven labourers and settled on a tract of land granted him in the district of George [very close to Knysna]. So impressed was he with the prospects of farming there that he arranged for about twenty more settlers to join him, and although his farming venture was not quite the succes he had hoped, the settlers for whom he was responsible soon managed to establish themselves comfortabley. The wide publicity given in Great Britain to the success of Moodie's and Tait's parties of settlers gave considerable impetus to the large settlement scheme of 1820..."
