About Isaac Thomas (Famous Indian Scout)

After fighting in the Revolutionary War, he returned to Virginia. From Virginia he emigrated through the Cumberland Gap into eastern Tennessee and set up a trading post on the bank of the Pigeon Forge River in what would become Sevier County. We understand that he was the first white settler in eastern Tennessee and was the founder of Sevierville, which he named for his good friend, John Sevier, the first governor of Tennessee. The first court of law in Sevier Coutny was held in Isaac Thomas' cabin. He enjoyed good rappot with the Indians and was an intermediary between them and the white settlers who moved into the area.

One story we read told of two Indian braves attacking Isaac Thomas as he stood on the river bank. The two braves came at him from opposite directions with tomahawks swinging. He grabbed both of them, one in each hand, and while he held one at bay he lifted the other from the ground and threw him into the river. Then he threw the other young Indian into the river. It was said that the young Indians did not bother him after that.
