Lucinda, b. 8 Mar. 1817, Saint Charles Twp, St. Charles Co., MO; d. 11 Feb. 1853, Pedee, Polk Co., OR. She is buried in Taylor Cem., Polk Co., OR; Memorial 65476889.

PATERNAL GRANDPARENTS: Andrew Zumwalt & Elizabeth Frazier. Andrew, b. 15 Nov. 1789, KY; d. 20 Oct. 1867, Lane Co., OR; Burial location uknown; he has an "unknown" memorial: 77496027.

Elizabeth, b. 17 July 1792, KY; d. 10 Sept 1878, Lewisville, Polk Co., OR; Elizabeth is purported to be buried Montgomery Cemetery, Polk Co., Oregon; Memorial 72247036.

John & Lucinda trekked to the Oregon Territory in 1846 along with his parents, Rev. Andrew Zumwalt & Elizabeth Frazier Zumwalt & siblings: Isaac Zumwalt (1815-1892) & his wife Sarah Crow Zumwalt; Thomas Rhodes Zumwalt (1824-1851) Mary Ann Zumwalt (1828-1901) Jerome Zumwalt (1833-1894);

The Zumwalt Clan took the Oregon Trail until they reached the Applegate Trail cutoff which they took.

John & Lucinda's children were: Sarah A. Zumwalt (1838-1852) John Andrew Zumwalt (b. 1840 Isaac Kent Zumwalt (1842-1921); of this memorial. Thomas M. Zumwalt (1845-1879)

Isaac married Mary Jane Darneille 30 June 1861 in Lane Co., Oregon. They had a daughter, Mary Ann Zumwalt. Isaac and Mary Jane divorced in 1867.

Isaac is found on an 1860 U.S. Census for Richardson Precinct, Lane Co., Oregon.

The 1880 U.S. Census for Lancaster Prec., Lane Co., Oregon, shows he's boarding with the Hyland family (B.S. & Adelia), working as a farm laborer. He's single.

Interestingly, on the same census for the same area is Elizabeth Harpole, married to a Peter Harpole. They have 7 children, ranging from 15 yrs to 1 month. This Elizabeth Harpole was b. 1846 in Tennessee. Her parents were born in Virginia. However, the 1870 census for Elizabeth indicates she was born in Missouri. On this census, the oldest child, Alvin, was b. 1865 in Oregon.

To confuse the issue even more, the 1860 census for Brices Precinct, Lane Co., Oregon shows an Elizabeth Harpole b. 1840 in Illinois. Then, the 1850 census for Marion Co., Oregon Territory shows an Elizabeth Harpole and apparently a sister Sarah Harpole. Elizabeth b. ca 1840 in Ill. They are living with a family named "Lucky". So, we have a married Elizabeth Harpole and single Elizabeth Harpole.

There is an Elizabeth Harpole who d. 1937 in Benton Co., OR.

If anyone reading this knows which Elizabeth Harpole Isaac married, I'd appreciate being contacted. Isaac was the first husband of my great-grandmother Mary Jane Darneille.

Isaac married Elizabeth Ann Harpole 17 Nov. 1888 in Lane Co., Oregon.

The 1900 U.S. Census finds Isaac in Junction City, Lane Co., Oregon, working as a day laborer. He is divorced. The census shows that his parents were born in Kentucky.

The 1920 U.S. Census for Lane County, Oregon shows Isaac apparently living in what appears to be a nursing home except there is also a 12-year old listed. Most of the people listed w/Isaac are 50+ years old. Also listed is a John Harpole, age 76; since Isaac is recorded as being 77 years old, perhaps this John is related to his former wife, Elizabeth?

Isaac Zumwalt, an inmate of the county home, dropped dead at the home Wednesday evening, August 24. The remains were buried from Walker's undertaking parlors Saturday afternoon. The burial was at Laurel Hill cemetery. Mr. Zumwalt was 81 years old.
