Common Errors to Avoid

Second husband: She is sometimes found on the internet as also marrying John Crossman. This is incorrect. She was married to John Tripp as Isabel Moses and buried as Isabel Tripp.

John Tripp, 1611 - 1678: A Glimpse into Our Founder's Life. by Janet Tripp Andrews edited by Jan E. Tripp © November, 2016. < PDF >

John Tripp was baptized 8 Sep 1611/1612 at Horkstow Parish, Lincolnshire, England according to a deposition (loose folder dated 1670; New Bedford Library) concerning his personal history. He states Horkstow as his birthplace.

One of about twelve children of John Tripp and Isabel Moses, John Tripp was apprenticed to John Baats of Thorsby, Lincolnshire to learn ship carpentry and served seven years and more. Thereafter, he bound himself (in 1633/1634) to Frances East for four years. After about one and one half years of service (1635/1636), East sold the contract to Robert Jafra of Boston. Jafra fled Boston, with John Tripp in tow, to Rhode Island to avoid religious persecution. Thereafter, Jafra sold the contract to Randall Holden of Portsmouth, RI. After some time, John Tripp paid off (probably 1637/1638) the remaining time on the contract. …

•Note:

According to the parish register of Horkstow, Lincolnshire, ENG (LDS FHL Film #504,248), Isabel Moyses/Moses was christened in Horkstow, Lincolnshire, ENG, 20 Mar 1584, the d/o Nicholas Moyses. She married John Tripp there in Horkstow on 30 Jul 1609. Her daughter Ann was chr. 7 Jul 1621 in Horkstow, and was buried in Horkstow 22 Feb 1626, i.e. age 4-1/2. Although there is no burial record for John Tripp, Isabel (Moyses) Tripp was called a widow in 1648 when her daughter Elizabeth was buried there in Horkstow. Isabel herself was bur. in Horkstow 4 Nov 1654.

Horkstow lies at the northern end of Lincolnshire, and Skirbeck lies at the southern end.

Isabel was christened, married, and buried in Horkstow and there is no evidence that she ever went even 20 miles from her home, much less all the way to Skirbeck. Her daughter Ann was born much too late to be the husband of Edmund Ingalls even if she had not died as a young child.

Below are copies of the records:
