ISABELLA CARROLL HENRY ADAMS (1819-1854) was born in York County, South Carolina, a daughter of Thomas Campbell Henry (1790-1877), a soldier in the War of 1812, and Elizabeth McElwee, daughter of a patriot in the American Revolution. The McElwee homestead was located near the Kings Mountain battlefield and is today part of the South Carolina State Park.

In York County, at the age of sixteen, on December 6, 1835, she was married to John Hope Adams (1811-1893), age twenty-four. At their farm along Crowder’s Creek in the lower section of what is today Gaston County, she gave birth to and reared five children: (1) Rebecca E. (10/19/1839-6/27/1841); (2) Jane Catherine (12/27/1841-6/3/1926) m. Robert Allison Caldwell; (3) William Meek (4/17/1847-1/23/1929) m. Nancy H. Adams, a first cousin; (4) Thomas C. Henry (2/26/1844-9/12/1844); and (5) Lorena Emeline (8/25/1849-10/2/1854).

The life of Isabella Adams was short, not unusual in that era. She died at her home at Crowder’s Creek on December 6, 1835, at the age of thirty-five, leaving her husband a widower with two surviving small children. Sometime after 1847, John Hope Adams married Mrs. Martha Shaw McGill McElwee (1821-1902), daughter of William and Martha Shaw Henry McGill and widow of James N. McElwee (1819-1846). They had three children of their own.

John Home Adams died at his Crowder’s Creek home on January 22, 1893, in his 82nd year. He is buried in the churchyard at Bethel Presbyterian Church in adjoining York County beside his first wife, Isabella.
