Isabella McGinnis

When Isabella Carlin was born on July 12, 1832, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, her father, Patrick, was 32 and her mother, Mary McCaffrey was 27 years old. Isabella had two children with Charles McCullough between 1853 and 1855. She then married John McGinnis and they had seven children together between 1859 and 1874. Isabella died on May 3, 1907, in her hometown of Pittsburgh at the age of 74, and was buried there.

Isabella lived in St Clair, Pennsylvania, in 1832. Her sister Catherine Carlin was born in July of 1836 in Pennsylvania when Isabella was 4 years old. Her sister Jane was born in July of 1837 also in Pennsylvania. Isabella lived in Lower St Clair, Pennsylvania, on June 1, 1840, and her mother, Mary Carlin, appeared as the widowed head of household of six with John (?) & Sarah (?) between 10-15 years old, Isabella (?) 5-10 years old, Catherine (?) & Jane (?) under 5 years of age. God bless them, not an easy life. Isabella's father Patrick Carlin had passed away in 1840 in Pennsylvania, at the age of 40 years old

Isabella was 18 years old and living in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, on August 16, 1850. Visiting with Relatives? Working as caregiver? Servant? Head of household was "R.C. Loomis - Shoe Merchant," Soon to be married and widowed, Isabelle's 2nd marriage in this same decade was to John McGinnis - a "bootmaker".

Isabella was living in Lower St. Clair, Pennsylvania, on August 24, 1850, eight days later with clearly identifiable family. In 1853 she was living in Ohio and her son John McCullough was born there. She was 21 years old. Two years later in October of 1855, her son Henry was born in Ohio.

Isabella Carlin married John McGinnis August 11, 1858, when she was 26 years old. Charles McGinnis was born in 1825 and passed away in 1899. Their daughter Margaret was born August 11, 1859, in Steubenville, Jefferson County, Ohio. Margaret passed away in 1952.

On June 1, 1860, Isabella, 27, was living in the 4th Ward of Steubenville, Ohio, with her second husband and her 3 children, 2 sons from 1st marriage appear as John McCullough and Henry McCullough, and her daughter as Margaret McGinnis. On November 14, 1860, Isabella's son Edward S., was born in Steubenville, Ohio. He passed away in 1950.

In June of 1864, at the age of 31, Isabella's daughter Mary Eva was born in Steubenville, Ohio. She passed away in 1930. On July 26, 1865, at the age of 33, Isabella's daughter, Anna C. was born in Jefferson County, Ohio. Anna passed away in 1952. The following year Isabella's son Frank was born in October of 1869. He passed away in 1955. On July 20, 1870, Isabella was 38 years old and living in Temperanceville, West Pittsburgh, Allegheny county, Pennsylvania.

At the age of 39 years old, Isabella's daughter Emma was born on February 27, 1872, in Pennsylvania. Emma passed away in 1935. Two years later at the age of 41 Isabella had son John February, 1874, but sadly, he passed away on September 25, 1874, when he was only seven months old.

On June 9, 1880, Isabella was 47 years old and was still living in Pittsburgh. If correctly asked and understood the 1880 Census question was: "Age at last birthday prior to June 1st?" But she was listed as age "46" even though on July 20, 1870, she was reported in the census as being "38 years of age at last birthday." At the time, Isabella was living at 43 South Main, Ward 36 Pittsburgh.

By June 11, 1900, Isabella was 67 years old and was living in the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Frank and Mary McMahon, at 1 Neptune Street, Pittsburgh, Ward 36. Isabella passed away on May 3, 1907, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at the age of 74 years old. She was living at 1809 Cliff St., 11th Ward, Pittsburgh, and was buried in the Old St. Mary Cemetery (near the new Children's Hospital located at Penn Avenue and 45th Street, Pittsburgh) Section M, Lot 271, Grave 5. An obituary from a local newspaper reads as follows:

Mrs. Isabella McGinnis Dead. Mrs. Isabella McGinnis, widow of John McGinnis, and a well-known resident of the West End, Pittsburgh, died at 12:35 o'clock this morning at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Francis Bernard McMahon, 1809 Cliff Street. She was born in Pittsburgh, and had lived in the West End all her life. Her husband, John McGinnis, died several years ago, and she is survived by two sons and four daughters; Frank and Edward McGinnis, Mrs. Mary McMahon and Mrs. Annie Stafford of Pittsburgh; Margaret McGinnis, at home, and Emma McGinnis of Nashville, Tennessee.
