About Isak Arvid Maki

ACCIDENT 16. – Jacob K. Mackey lost his life in the 8th level south of No. 1 shaft, Peninsula Mine, April 11th, by his own negligence. Mackey was sitting on a box of dynamite. He had in his hand a stick of dynamite warming it over the flame of a candle. Some of the Miners saw him and told him he would get hurt. Mackey answered, saying, “He knew what he was doing.” Soon after he was spoken to, a spark of fire from the paper around the stick of dynamite dropped into a box of exploding caps, setting fire to the caps which exploded, tearing off his left hand, cutting a terrible hole in his throat and blowing out his right eye. The box of dynamite, on which he was sitting, had been sent down from the surface into the mine but a short time before in a frozen condition, which prevented the powder from exploding. An inquest was held before Justice Rogers and the jury returned a verdict “That Mackey came to his death by the explosion of a box of caps through his own carelessness.”

“On Monday evening, in a Boston trench, our citizen Isak Kirkonmäki died by accident, who in his carelessness blew up dynamite when in his hand, which completely removed his left hand, and otherwise badly bruised. The deceased was 19 years old and originally from Hietaniemi.”
