ISOBEL LEITCH

Isobel Leitch, here treated, is the daughter of David Leitch and Jean Bryson and the triplet sister of Margaret Leitch and Elizabeth Leitch She and her twin were born before 25 December 1753, the date upon which their baptism was registered at Glasgow in Lanarkshire, Scotland. [National Records of Scotland, Glasgow Baptisms, reference OPR.644/1/12] Isobel Leitch was not born at Kilmardinny.

Death

A date of death has not been identified for Isobel Leitch, here treated, but please note that she is not the two year old child who was buried at Glasgow on 6 July 1796.

Kilmardinny

Isobel Leitch, here treated, was the niece of John Leitch of Kilmardinny. She was not born at Kilmardinny

With regard to Kilmardinny: "The principal part of the Kilmardinny estate, with the mansion house thereof, was bought by Mrs. Helen Colquhoun, widow of William Colquhoun of Garscadden. About the beginning of this century [nineteenth century] she sold her part to John Leitch, of the well known firm of Leitch & Smith, West India merchants in Glasgow. He afterwards acquired one of the other portions also. From John Leitch, Kilmardinny passed to the family of his nephew, James Leitch, in whose possession it remained till 1833". Old Country Houses

Elizabeth Grant of Rothiemurchus refers to John Leith's purchase of Kilmardiny in her memoirs: "1805-1807 ..... My uncle Leitch had bought a pretty place near Glasgow, and made a handsome house out of the shabby one he found there by adding to the front a great building in very good taste. We two were quite astonished at the first aspect of Kilmerdinny ..... Memoirs of a Highland Lady: the autobiography of Elizabeth Grant of Rothiemurchus, afterwards Mrs. Smith of Baltiboys, 1797-1830 (John Murray, London, 1898), p. 38
