!Death: Will dated 23 July 1746, proved 9 Sep 1747. Names "my beloved wife Emary Cole", Benj amin and Rufus "my sons" and "my natural children" Ebenezer, Hannah Snow, Israel, Silvanus, Dorcas Burgis and Emery Cole. Daugher Hannah Snow received land purchased from Israel Higgins at Great Neck.

!Burial: Israel is supposed to be buried in the Old Cove Cemetery at Eastham. In the 1940s, Louise Palen was there, and Alice Lowe the then town historian pointed out his approximate grave site. The stone is gone, or was as recently as the 1990s. [Info from Margaret Sharp]

Austin's MFTFG did not correctly print the abstract of his will, missing this distinction between "natural children" and "my sons".

One theory is that Israel had two wives, Emary being the second, and his "natural chldren" being from his first wife. One other variant of this theory is that Benjamin and Rufus were sons of Emary by her first marriage and adopted by Israel Cole. The naming of one natural daughter "Emery" may indicate a possible family connection between the two wives, e.g., perhaps they were sisters.

In support of these theories, Margaret Sharp reports to me that a late cousin, Louise Palen (desc. of Nathaniel Cole Jr. through son James Henry Cole) wrote that she visited Eastham in the late 1940s and spoke with the then Eastham Town Historian about the children of Israel Cole II. Louise was told that Israel had two wives and that two of the sons went by the name Cole but that they were children of the second wife and adopted by Israel.

The other theory is that Emary was Israel's only wife and the mother of all his children, and that the usage of "natural" hae some other connotation at the time that we are misinterpreting.
