Biography

Israel [Israell] Dean [Deane] was born in Taunton, Massachusetts, on August 4, 1685, the son of John Deane and Sarah Edson.[1][2]

He married Katharine Bird of Dorchester, Massachusetts. There are marriage records from both Taunton, March 20, 1704-5, and Roxbury, Massachusetts, March 27, 1704-5.[1][3][4]

Israel Dean died in Taunton on July 4, 1719, "aged 34" (gravestone).[1] He is buried at the Summer Street "Neck O Land" Cemetery in Taunton, where his gravestone reads:[5]

Excerpts From Will

His will oddly appears to have been written "fifth day of July Anno Domini one thousand seven hundred & nineteen," or the day after his death as is recorded on his gravestone and in town records. In it he begins, "In the name of God Amen I Israel Dean (Son of John Dean) of Taunton in New England, being seized with a fever, & under some ?apprehension? that it may prove mortal to me, but of sound judgement & memory : Do make this my last will and testment." He names "my beloved wife Kathrine Dean to be sole Executrix." He further states, "God hath given me five children, whomof four are daughters: my will is that my only son Israel should have one hundred pounds of my Estate before his double portion in ye discretion of my estate, & in case that child which my wife is now big with be a son [presumably Abiel], my will is that he shall have one hundred pounds of my estate besides his single portion in the discretion of my estate & the daughters to have single & equal portions."[6]

Children

Children of Israel and Katharine (Bird) Dean, Taunton births:

  1. Stephen, born February 15 or 17, 1705-6; died March 3, 1705-6.[7][8]
  2. Catherine "Katherine", born February 10, 1706-7; married, December 31, 1730, Ebenezer Hayward [Howard] of Bridgewater, Massachusetts.[9][10]
  3. Silence, born July 7 or 17, 1709; died April 2, 1726, in 17th year.[11][12]
  4. Mehitabell, born April 10, 1711; married (1) Nehemiah Walker, (2) Stephen Smith; died October 15, 1781.[13][14][15]
  5. Israel, born January 28, 1712-13.[16]
  6. Joshua, born March 3, 1714-15; died before 1719 (not named in father's will).[17]
  7. Susannah, born 1717; married Stephen Wilbor.[18]
  8. Abiel, born about 1719; married, November 28, 1741, Anna Tisdale; died March 31, 1781.[19][20]

In his 1719 will, Israel states that he has four daughters but does not specifically name them. We have: Katherine, Silence, Mehitebel and Susannah. Israel also names his "only son Israel" which leads to the conclusion that son Joshua must have died prior to the writing of the will. Israel's reference to "that child which my wife is now big with" must refer to a then unborn Abiel who was born sometime (probably soon) after his father's death.[6]
