Emil Frank was born on July 11, 1878, in Wittlich. In 1912, he took over the textile business on the Market Square in Wittlich which his father Isaac had founded in 1870; he fought for Germany in WWI and became head of the Jewish community in Wittlich in 1920. He was a member of the volunteer fire department and enjoyed great respect among the residents of Wittlich.

Despite this, Frank was not spared the demand by the Nazis to boycott Jewish businesses. He just barely escaped the Nazi racial hysteria by emigrating. On September 21, 1941, he fled via Spain and Cuba to Utica, New York, U.S.A, where he died on June 21, 1954.

The greatly respected businessman descended to the level of a simple door-to-door peddler, offering shoe laces and brushes for sale in broken English.

May have been born July 11, 1878. May have died in 1956.

In this documentary, a German woman from the town of Wittlich in Germany attempts to learn what happened to Emil Frank, a German Jew from whom her family purchased a wardrobe during World War II. During this program, the woman talks with the following people about the life of Emil Frank: Frau Mehs, the wife of a former mayor in Germany; Maria Musselek, a patron of Frank's store in Wittlich; the store's treasurer Karl Marmann; Frank's niece Lily Kretzmer; his nephew Harry Frank; Victor Flax, a member of the synagogue that Emil Frank attended in the United States; Frank's grandchild Michael Kahn; Susan Feingold, Frank's niece; Elisabeth Con Den Hoff, a member of the council that reunited expelled Jews in 1991; psychologist Ulrich Jweckel-Laurenze; and Erna Baumann and Selma Eulau, previously expelled Jews who returned to Wittlich in 1991.
