About Israel Polack
Israel Polack (Hebrew: ישראל פולק; 1909–1993) was an Austro-Hungarian-born Romanian, Chilean and Israeli textile industrialist. He is best known for founding the Israel-based Polgat company.
Biography
Israel Polack was born to a Jewish family in Borşa, Transylvania. In 1925, he moved to Gura Humorului, Bukovina, and later to Cernăuţi. While in Cernăuţi, he studied at yeshiva and at a textile plant. In 1935, he founded an enterprise of its kind in the city.
Business career
After World War II, he emigrated to Chile where he founded a textile plant. In 1960, Pinhas Sapir, then Israel's Minister of Industry, invited Polack to establish a textile plant in Kiryat Gat. Polack's new company, Polgat, grew into the largest textile, clothing and knitwear company in Israel. It eventually became a public corporation whose shares were traded on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange. In 1970, the Pollaks founded Bagir, a men's division for suits and jackets.
Awards and recognition
In 1990, Polack was awarded the Israel Prize for his special contribution to society and the State of Israel.
In 1992, he was honored by the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

פולק נולד ב-1910 בעיירה בורשה שבמרמורש (טרנסילבניה) למשפחה שהיו בה אחד עשר ילדים. כשהיה בן 15 עברה משפחתו לגורה הומורולוי שבבוקובינה מסיבות כלכליות. לאחר מכן פולק למד בבית הספר לטקסטיל שבצ'רנוביץ ועבד לפרנסתו במפעל הסריגה. בשנת 1935 הקים בצ'רנוביץ מפעל לטקסטיל וב-1937 נשא לאישה את אדית צורף בת גורה הומורה
לאחר מלחמת העולם השנייה היגר לצ'ילה והקים שם מפעל טקסטיל גדול. היה פעיל במיוחד בתחום החינוך ואף שימש כנשיא הפדרציה הציונית בצ'ילה
בשנת 1960 פולק הוזמן על ידי מי שהיה אז שר התעשייה פנחס ספיר להקים מפעל טקסטיל בקריית גת. פולק נענה להצעה והקים את "פולגת", תשלובת הטקסטיל הגדולה ביותר במדינת ישראל. תחילת תרומתו לתשלובת כמשקיע חוץ, אך לאחר שעלה לישראל ב-1966 שימש כמנכ"ל התשלובת. התשלובת נקראה "פולגת" על שמו ועל שם קריית גת
לאחר עלייתו לישראל היה פעיל בתחומים רבים והיה ממייסדי חברת "כלל תעשיות". בשנת 1977 זכה פולק בפרס התעשייה בקטגוריית הטקסטיל. בשנת 1979 הוענק לו פרס הרצל מטעם עיריית הרצליה, על תרומתו הבולטת בתחום הציונות. בשנת 1990 קיבל את פרס ישראל על תרומתו לחברה ולמדינה. בשנת 1992 העניקה לו האוניברסיטה העברית תואר דוקטור לשם כבוד. שנה לאחר מכן, ב-1993, נפטר
