The Israel Prize
(Hebrew: פרס ישראל) is an award handed out by the State of Israel and is largely regarded as the state's highest honor. It is presented annually, on Israeli Independence Day, in a state ceremony in Jerusalem, in the presence of the president, the prime minister, the speaker of the Knesset (Israel's legislature), and the Supreme Court president. The prize was set up in 1953 at the initiative of the Minister of Education Ben-Zion Dinor, who himself went on to win the prize in 1958 and 1973
פרס ישראל הוא הפרס החשוב והיוקרתי ביותר הניתן במדינת ישראל. את הענקתו, יזם בשנת תשי"ג (1953), שר החינוך דאז, בן-ציון דינור, והוא מוענק מאז באופן רצוף. מדי שנה בשנה מגישות וועדות השופטים לשר החינוך את המלצתן להענקת הפרס בתחומים שונים ומגוונים בהווית העשייה והיצירה בישראל
הזוכים הם אזרחי-ישראל - יחידים, או במקרים חריגים שותפי הישג שגילו הצטיינות מיוחדת, מצוינות ופריצת דרך בתחומם או שתרמו תרומה מיוחדת לחברה בישראל
טקס הענקת הפרסים נערך מדי שנה, במוצאי יום העצמאות בירושלים, בירת ישראל, בטקס רשמי וממלכתי, ובמעמד ראשי המדינה: הנשיא, ראש הממשלה, יו"ר הכנסת, נשיא בית משפט העליון, ראש עירית ירושלים ושר החינוך - שהוא הממונה מטעם הממשלה על נושא פרס ישראל
על מנת להקיף את כל התחומים האפשריים, הוחלט כי פרס ישראל יינתן בכל שנה בתחומים אחרים, ותהיה מחזוריות של התחומים במהלך השנים.

- Israel Prize and controversy: Goldreich was selected to receive the 2021 Israel Prize in mathematics. Education Minister Yoav Galant vetoed his selection. In late 2021, the new Minister of Education Yifat Shasha-Biton also blocked Goldreich from receiving the prize. However, on March 2022, High Court Judges accepted an appeal by a nomination committee member against Education Minister Shasha-Biton’s decision to withhold 2021 award from Goldreich and ruled that Israel Prize must be given to professor Oded Goldreich. The prize was given to him in a private ceremony at the Ministry of Education office in Jerusalem in April 2022.
