About Ivann Basil Vince-Jillings
Ivann Vince-Jillings (1983 - 2003)
Brief overview:
Ivann (20), was shot in the back of the head, when he was pulled out of his vehicle, by six armed hijackers in Edenvale, around 05h00 on 22nd June 2003.
Lynne Vince-Jillings recounted the events of what happened that morning at 06h00. Police knocked on her door to tell her that Ivann had been shot dead in a carjacking an hour earlier. She was taken to the mortuary to identify the body. "I was numb, completely shattered," she said. "There was nobody there to clean up the body. My son was just lying on a slab. I had to identify his blood-soaked body with the back of his head blown off."
The killers stole Ivann's car, cellphone, wallet and watch. Police found his vehicle two weeks later in Alexandra. Mattheau, Ivann's older brother, had to go and identify the car, then drive it back as the police said there was not enough policemen to do this. Lynne said that the car was smeared with blood, and Mattheau was severely traumatised.
After months of no feedback from police, Lynne founded and launched a campaign called ALIVE, challenging the then president, Thabo Mbeki, and the government to take action against the increase in crime.
“I decided there and then that there was no one out there looking for my son’s murderer,” she said. “There was no way that I was going to allow my son to become another statistic. The police were doing nothing about it, so I decided to do something myself.”
"Alive printed leaflets, set up a website where victims and relatives may record their stories, and planned a mass demonstration in Johannesburg on 30th November 2003. It is threatening the Government with legal action for breaching “every citizen’s constitutional right to protection under the law”."
