Izak, known as Francois (40), a former provincial cricket player, and green-keeper at the Maraisburg golf course (CMR Golf Club), was shot dead at the club, on 4th June 2001. Employees found his body when they arrived for work. Inspector Yolande Bouwer said, "Weideman was shot in the neck, stomach and leg around 7am, shortly after he arrived at the CMR Golf Course where he was the green keeper."
Francois, as he was known, represented Transvaal and Northern Transvaal as a medium-fast bowler and aggressive lower-order batsman from 1980-87. He also gained SA Universities colours while studying at Rand Afrikaans University. Former United Cricket Board of SA managing director Ali Bacher said Weideman's death was a great loss. "It is so tragic. I'm devastated by the news. He was a wonderful sportsman and an outstanding, talented individual," Bacher told Sapa. Weideman, played for the Transvaal cricket team in his twenties and also worked for the SA Cricket Union for four years. "He was involved in our development programme for disadvantaged communities for three to four years from 1987," Bacher said.
