Joseph Jereczek, East End Grocer 50 Years, Dead Business Man Succumbs at Rochester Following Operation. On City Council Served as Member of Fire and Police Board 18 Years

Joseph W. Jereczek, 707 East Fifth street, funeral director and grocer in Winona for 50 years, died at 10:35 a.m. today at St. Mary's hospital, Rochester, where he underwent an operation last Tuesday. He went to the hospital last Monday. He was 70 years old. Mr. Jereczek was born in Poland, and came to this country when two or three years old. He started his grocery in its present location, 300 Mankato avenue, in 1887, and a short time later also started work as a funeral director. He was one of the first appointees to the board of fire and police commissioners, serving from the time it was established May 4, 1915, until April 26, 1933. His successor on the board is Theodore Bambenek. He also serves on the water board, being appointed when that board was formed in 1906, and serving until he resigned April 4, 1911.

Eight Years an Alderman. Mr. Jereczek served two four-year terms as alderman from the fourth ward, the first time from 1899 to 1903, and the second from 1911 to 1915. He was secretary of the local the local branch of the Polish National alliance, a member of the Winona council of the Knights of Columbus, St. Joseph's society of St. Stanislaus church, the Winona Athletic club, the Holy Name society of St. Stanislaus parish and the Woodman of the World. Mr. Jereczek was a civic and business leader here for many years and was one of the pioneers in the east End business section and contributed much to the progress of this city. Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. B.F. (Sophie) Cisewski, Park Ridge, Ill., and Mrs William (Margaret) Brown and Hermina, at home; seven grandchildren, and three sisters. Mrs. Stanislaus Wyganowski, Grenville, S. D., Mrs. Maggie Herek, Manvel, N. D. and Mrs. Joseph Wiczek, Stevens Point, Wis. His wife died a number of years ago.
