About J. E. Homer Kerr Jr.

A native and lifelong resident of Savannah, GA., J. E. Homer Kerr Jr. graduated from Benedictine Military School in Savannah in 1934. He served in the Army in World War II and later served in the Georgia National Guard as Battery Commander of the Irish Jasper Greens and was a member of the Republican Blues and the Chatham Artillery. In 1962 he retired from the U.S. Army as a Major.

Kerr served as Assistant Controller of Savannah for 18 years leaving in 1952 to work at the Georgia Ports Authority as controller until 1956.

He started Kerr Bookkeeping Inc. and in 1958 he opened the first H&R Block office for the state of Georgia in Savannah. He subsequently opened the first H&R Block for the state of Florida in Jacksonville. In 1979 he retired as district manager of Southeast Georgia for H&R Block.

After retirement, he moved to Bluffton, South Carolina and joined the Bluffton United Methodist Church and the Bluffton Men's Club. He also was a member of the Savannah Lions Club.

Homer Kerr died at 30 December 1985 at the Live Oak Hospital in Ridgeland, S,C. after a short illness.
