ACCIDENT NO. 11-February 5, 1911-Jacob Solki, South Hecla Branch, C. & H.

Jacob Solki, a Finn, employed with a timber gang at the 66th level North, No. 7 shaft, South Hecla, was injured on February 1st, dying in the hospital on February 5. According to the physician in charge, death was due to septic meningitis caused by the injury to his head. At the inquest held over his body the following witnesses testified:

Jacob Brula: "I am timber boss of the gang with which deceased worked. He was working with me the day he got hurt. We had our heaving pole up and had pulled up a piece of timber and put it in place. I saw the rope was slack and I told the engine boy to go pull up the slack. As soon as he did this the heaving pole slipped out and the blocks struck Solki and knocked him down the mill. We had the heaving pole put up in the usual way and thought it was secure. Jacob was up on the staging."

Chas. Olson: "I work in Jack Brula's gang. I run the engine. We had hoisted a piece of timber in place and I was then told to hoist up the slack in the rope. I did this and the heaving pole came down. I did not see deceased get struck, but I heard someone yell. We went down the mill for him. He was holding his head and said nothing."

Verdict: "That the said Jacob Solki came to his death on the 5th day of February, 1911, from the effect of injuries received falling down the mill at the 66th level No. 9 shaft, South Hecla Branch of Calumet and Hecla Mine."

Onnettomuus nro 11 - 5. helmikuuta 1911 - Jacob Solki, South Hecla Branch, Calumet & Hecla.

Jacob Solki, suomalainen, töissä South Hecla -kaivoksen tasolla 66, pohjoiseen kuilusta nro 7, loukkaantui 1. helmikuuta ja kuoli sairaalassa 5. helmikuuta. Vastaavan lääkärin mukaan kuoleman aiheutti septinen aivokalvontulehdus, joka johtui päähän kohdistuneesta vammasta

Kuolemansuun tutkinnan aikana kuultiin seuraavia todistajia:

Jacob Brula: "Olen pomo timpuriryhmässä, jossa vainaja työskenteli. Hän oli töissä minun kanssani sinä päivänä jolloin loukkaantui. Meillä oli vinttiuritaljan pylväs pystytettynä, ja me olimme nostaneet puunrungon ka asettaneet sen paikalleen. Näin että köysi oli löysällä ja käskin koneenkäyttäjää ("engine boy") vetämään löysät sisään. Kun hän oli sen tehnyt, nostopylväämme lipesi, iski Solkea ja pudotti hänet alas kivikasaan. Olimme pystyttäneet pylvään tavanomaiseen tapaan ja mielestäni se oli turvallinen. Jacob oli ylhäällä väliaikaisilla telineillä ("up on the staging")."

Chas. Olson: "Työskentelen Jack Brula:n ryhmässä. Olen koneenkäyttäjä. Olimme nostaneet hirren paikalleen ja sitten sain käslyn nostaa löysän köyden ylös. Tein sen ja nostopylväs kaatui. En nähnyt menehtyneen loukkaantuvan, mutta kuulin jonkun huutavan. Menin alas kivikasalle. Hän piteli päätään eikä sanonut mitään."

Päätös: "Jacob Solki kuoli 5. helmikuuta vammoihin, jotka oli saanut tapaturmassa Calumet and Hecla Mine -yhtiön South Hecla -kaivoksen kuilussa nro 9 tasolla 66."
