About Jabez Fitch
Mooers Town Supervisor (1817-21, 1823-24, 1827-37) came to Mooers in 1802 from Connecticut by way of Champlain, NY, bought 350 acres north of present site of Mooers Village, was a mechanic and builder by trade. 1798 Tax Assessment for Northern New York, Town of Champlain, lists “Jabez Fitch, 151 acres, 92 perches, adjoining Pliny Moor Esq.'s Land on the river Chazy. One wood house. ($50). $440.” Jabez worked for Pliny Moore, building his mills and his residence. Jabez also built public buildings in Clarerack, Columbia County, and Spencertown, a church in Washington County, and the Presbyterian Church in Plattsburgh, NY. His children all settled on the North Road in Mooers.
