About Jack Gallagher

09.16.09 Aunt Terry interview:

Jack lived at 43 Lawn St during the 1910 Census as is listed as a Cashier in a Barber Shop, most likely in the JP area of Boston. Later in his adult life he lived at 1 Sterling Sq. Boston, MA (South Boston), and was some form of housing manager there, and seemed to be quite a character. (this was previously known as both the Old Harbor Project as well as the Mary McCormick Housing Project) The story goes is that he apparently told Maurice Tobin that he was a good looking and well put together guy and he should run for Mayor of Boston. Tobin won and became Mayor after JM Curley and then eventually become Governor and worked on the Truman campaign. He was ultimately assigned as the US Labor Secretary. Note: the 1900 Census has his birth year as 1883, so it's quite possible that this is correct, as his Father immigrated to the US in 1882.

The 1930 Census (on April 9th) has Jack and his wife Mabel living at.. and he's listed as a Salesman, selling 'Dry Goods'. This is where his birth is listed as "Chicago" but that is crossed out and "Illinois" is listed. At this time his address is: 750A Huntington Avenue.

more:

Apparently one of our relatives asked Senator Billy Bulger if he new Jack Gallagher, and Billy responded "you mean, Mr. Gallagher". The Bulger brothers grew up in the Sterling Square housing development that Jack worked at for the city.

Apparently Uncle Chickie also helped out Billy get out of a few frays in his younger years when he lived with Uncle Jack as his place was close to the Hockey Rink (maybe South Boston Rink). Chickie also seemed to have befriended Whitey as well... (Note that Chickie's middle name is "Maurice", which was named after Mr. Tobin; who his Father (Charles) was a Chauffeur for)

Jack seemed to spend a lot of time at the track in East Boston, (Suffolk Downs) and bet his paycheck. If he won he bought stocks, if he lost he'd take the T home.

He had lots of losing tickets in his bedroom at home from the track.

Was a good looking guy

Opened up the Piggery with Charles in Randolph

Jack and his wife Mabel are buried at St. Joseph's Cemetery West Roxbury MA. Section 2 of St. Vincent's section across Baker St from the main cemetery on the left side just as you enter. It's plot #94. Know that there are no Headstone's in the front of this section (only head markers) and their grave is not marked by a marker. They are just beneath the 'Mellon' headstone, in a single plot (over/under)
