About Jacob Arentsz Kool
Disputed Origins and Patronyms
Some sources have identified Jacob Arentsz as a son of Adriaen Jacobsz Kool and Margaretha van Rosendael. There are no known sources connecting him to these parents. if Jacob's father was Adriaen Jacobsen Kool, then Jacob's patronymic name would have been Adriaensen or a variation thereof. Adriaensen is the patronymic that is formed by adding sen, zoon, or simply s, se or sz to the father's first name. Jacob's patronym of Arentsz indicates that his father was named Arent, not Adriaen. Moreover, Jacob named his eldest son "Arent"; based on Dutch naming practices of that era, that is a strong indication that Jacob's own father was named Arent.
Some sources have identified this man with the patronymic Barentsen or a variant thereof (e.g., Jacob Barentsen Kool), which would indicate that his father was named Barent. This is also contradicted by records showing him as Jacob Arentsz.
According to Benson's authoritative study The Barent Jacobsen Cool Family : "The Dordrecht line of Kools going back to Adriaen Kool in the year 1450 [i.e., the family of Adriaen Jacobsz Kool] has no connexion whatsoever with the family of Barent Jacobsen Kool/Cool."
