In 1775, Jacob Bowman (Bauman), a German, settled on the south side of Towanda Creek, opposite Mr Fox. He was a Loyalist. Upon the breaking out of hostilities, he retired to Canada and his son, Jacob, joined the Indians and Tories. The Foxes and Bowmans were the only white families within the Towandas before the Revolutionary War.
