About Jacob Chesler
I have a CD of an interview with Sarah and Jacob's daughter Ellen from 1975 in which she tells of her life in Slonim. She came to the US when she was 9. There were 5 children in her family in "Slunnim". Her father had left for America. Life was unbearable because of anti semitism and pogroms, they were constantly in danger. Her father worked and slept in a sweatshop and saved money so the family could come. They sailed from Rotterdam on the Rengdam. Their father had been gone 7 years. They came before Pesach and by September they all spoke English. Jacob was hospitalized and bedridden for years. He made cigarettes and became a weaver. His nephew had a knitting mill.. He'd been"crippled by a horse" so the children worked and all of them quit school for a time. Her sister was a milliner. HIAS helped immigrants. Her younger brother was a college grad-an engineer. Her uncle (Sarah's brother) was an artist, composer, and writer. The family was still Orthodox and Jacob and Sarah were members of the Sattinaver Society.
When he was older, Jacob Chesler lived in Brooklyn with his daughter Bertha and her husband Sam Kalm.
The company (J. Chesler & Sons Co) lock and mirror company was started by the three Chesler brothers - Nathan, Reuben, and Abraham together with their brother-in-law Sam Kalm.
from Howard Chesler: When I was just a little kid growing up in Brooklyn, we used to visit the Kalm house on Bedford Ave in Brooklyn. We went there to visit my grandfather Jacob who lived with his oldest daughter Bertha. her husband Sam and their two daughters Renee and Edith. Edith outlived two husbands and currently lives in Sarasota, Fl. In their later years after the girls married, the Kalms relocated to Roslyn a village about 5 miles east of where we live on Long Island.
