About Jacob Frey
Jacob Frey grew up in Oakton, Virginia, a Washington, D.C., suburb, and attended the College of William & Mary on a track scholarship. He graduated in 2004 with a degree in government and earned a J.D. degree from Villanova University in 2009.
After graduating from law school, Frey relocated to Minneapolis, where he joined the law firm of Faegre & Benson (now Faegre Baker Daniels). He later worked for the firm Halunen & Associates.
Soon after moving to Minneapolis, Frey became active in community organizing, aiding tenants who lost their homes in a tornado and organizing a charity race on behalf of a group working for marriage equality.
In November 2013, Frey was elected to the Minneapolis City Council. As a City Council member, he focused on affordable housing, environmental policy, workplace regulations, and voting access.
Frey was elected mayor of Minneapolis in November 2017 after campaigning on a platform of increasing support for affordable housing and improving police-community relations. He was sworn into office on January 2, 2018, becoming Minneapolis's second Jewish mayor and its second-youngest.
In October 2019, Frey received national attention when he demanded that Donald Trump's presidential campaign pay a $530,000 public safety bill connected re-election rally at the city-owned Target Center. In response to Trump's Twitter attack on him, Frey wrote, “Yawn… Welcome to Minneapolis where we pay our bills, we govern with integrity, and we love all of our neighbors.”
