John was born before 1762, apparently, because the 1790 Federal Census of Cumberland County, PA, lists him, his first wife, and 3 daughters whose births took place between 1783 and 1790. He was married twice while living in PA.

He appears to have served in the same military division as his father. Was a member of the company of Captain Alexander Peebles, Cumberland county militia.

In VA, he was named in his father's will in 1796, his name was on the county's 1800 tax list, and listed as the guardian of his two youngest sons in 1823.

John Gish seems to be the second child born to Christian and Sophia (Houk) Gish. without an exact date, we can assume he was born before 1762 because the 1790 Federal census of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania lists him, his first wife and three daughters whose births took place between 1783 and 1790. Four years later, John, his second wife and growing family were in Botetourt County, Virginia. John's name doesn't appear on the deed books as a grantor nor grantee of land. In fact, I know of only three instances of John's residency in the County; his name in his father's will (1796); his name on the County's 1800 tax list; the guardianship of his two sons in 1823*.

As noted above, John married twice while living in Pennsylvania. His first wife was Catherine Stover, daughter of Rev. William Stover. Following Catherine's death (ca 1793/95), John married Mrs. Mary M. Wagner (nee Bretz). after John's death Mary married (1821 Botetourt County, Virginia) John Crumpecker.

John had ten children, but only nine lived to maturity. Here the children born to Catherine (Stover) Gish:
