About Jacob Lycurgus Hughey

Birth: Apr. 20, 1843 Piney Fork Crittenden County Kentucky, USA Death: Apr. 23, 1928 McLeansboro Hamilton County Illinois, USA

The following was written by Rev. Hughey: Jacob L. Hughey, the fourth son of J. R. and M. A. Hughey was born near Marion, Kentucky, April 20, 1843, and lived with his parents until enlistment in the Civil War. On August 12, 1862 he joined Company B, 87 Illinois Regiment at Grayville, Ill., and remained in the service until the close of the War, and was mustered out June, 16, 1865. He professed religion and joined the Cumberland Presbyterian church at Piney Fork, Kentucky August 9, 1858, and came under the care of Princeton Presbytery as a candidate for minister in October 18, 1866; licensed to preach October 2, 1869, and ordained April 30, 1870. After the War he attended school at Mt. Zion and Lincoln, Illinois and Lebanon University at Lebanon, Tennessee. He was in the active ministry 49 years, serving churches as a pastor in Kentucky, Kansas, Indiana and Illinois. He served the church at McLeansboro as pastor on two different occasions, extending over a period of several years in a most acceptable and agreeable manner. In testimony of the affection which this church held for Brother Hughey, March 6, 1927, he was by this congregation elected Pastor Emeritus. During his pastorate he witnessed hundreds of conversions and received many into the church; conducted eight camp meetings at Piney Fork, Kentucky. Brother Hughey represented his Presbytery in the General Assembly ten different times and acted as State Clerk for several years, and was honorably retired as a minister by the Ewing Presbytery in October 1918. In addition to his work as a minister he was President of the Southern Illinois College for a number of years. On August 27, 1871, he was married to Sallie J. Maxwell, daughter of A. N. and Agnes A. Maxwell, at Fredonia, Kentucky. To them was born four sons and three daughters, Eugene M., Arthur M., Kirk M., Anna, Ethel, Dwight M., and Agnes. In closing this brief statement we feel that the fruitage of his life has not been as full as desired, yet, the joy and blessedness of a life effort in trying to fill the mission to which the blessed Lord has called him, is worth vastly more than all the world could it be possessed for thousands of years. To My Dear Companion, who has been so faithful and helpful, bearing heavy burdens without a murmur, enduring heartships for the Gospel's sake, every encouraging me under the most trying circumstances, I desire to offer this tribute, for without her sympathy and support my life would have been a failure. To me she has been a angel all these years of labor.
