According to a Web report (November 2004) conscription occurred at 21, and if that's right, military service would have begun about 1909. He and fellow workers were accused of a murder and he was sent to Siberia. He allegedly escaped by hiding in a hay wagon. Both Jacob's mother and his sister (Minnie) allegedly opposed his marriage to Gussie Slakman (Jerome Braun November 2004).
