Jacob Mertz, 66, resident of Prairieville and Sigel townships for many years and who had resided in New Ulm for the past year and a half, died at his home, 502 North Minnesota street, at 12:15 pm today. Mr. Mertz had been in failing health since April 9.
Funeral arraignments have not been made but will be announced in Saturday's Daily Journal.
Mr. Mertz was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Mertz and was born in Priarieville township, Sept. 23, 1880. He grew to manhood on the home farm and was married to Miss Katherine Flor, July 20, 1909, in Holy Trinity Catholic church. Mr. and Mrs. Mertz took up their residence on a farm in Prairieville where they resided for 15 years. They moved to a farm in Sigel township. this was the home until 1.5 years ago, when they retired and came to New Ulm.
Mr. Mertz is survived by his widow and the following children: Edwin Mertz, Sigel township; Mrs. Gervas (Arline) Krambeer, Sigel township, and the Misses Ordell and Mildred at home. there is one grandchild.
Mr. Mertz is also survived by five sisters and four brothers: Mrs. Math Hackert, Kensal, N.D.; Mrs. Anna Flor and Mrs. Barbara Palta, New Ulm: Mrs. Margaret Hillesheim and Mrs. Frank Marks, John and Nick, Sleepy Eye: Henry, Washington, and Anton, Sigel.
Mr. Mertz was a member of St. John's court. He was active in his home community and took an interest in all public questions.
