Jacob ROUTH, Sr. is the son of Zachariah ROUTH and his wife Hannah Jane YORK of Chester County, Pennsylvania. In 1768 when Jacob ROUTH was age nineteen; he married Martha "Mollie" YORK, age sixteen, daughter of his neighbor Henry YORK and his first wife Eve Dorthy WEIR.

Jacob ROUTH is regarded as the patriarch of the extensive ROUTH families of Randolph and Guilford County, North Carolina. The late Lawrence William ROUTH compiled and published the excellent book "Rouths of Randolph County, North Carolina" in 1977. As my second cousin and fellow ROUTH genealogist, Lawrence asked for my help. Specifically in preparation of the publication for the descendants of my grandmother Lou Velia ROUTH YORK, pages 70-75. We often spent time sharing genealogical research information while visiting in each others home during the early 1970's. Lawrence would make annual trips to Texas. Lawrence supported and served the Wycliffe Translators and the Jungle Aviation & Radio Service (JAARS, https://www.jaars.org/) Annual Executive meetings as a very generous philanthropist for overseas Christian mission work in remote locations of the world. I would make annual trips to Asheboro & Greensboro, North Carolina to visit with Lawrence ROUTH at his Greensboro home in the late 1970's. We were both rock hound's as well as dedicated genealogist of the ROUTH family. However, Pages 4 and 5 of his book have significant errors which I have corrected through various Find-A-Grave memorials.

On page 4 of the ROUTH book Lawrence states: "Jacob Routh purchased 120 acres and appurtenances from William and Charity YORK FIELDS in 1788". The Sandy Creek Baptist Church is located a short way (1 mile) south of this tract of land Jacob ROUTH purchased. Jacob lived the remainder of his life on this land. When he was old, he married a second time to Sarah ALLRED on 29 March 1824. He deeded his home in trust to Mahala ALLRED in 1828 to care for him and his wife, Sarah Allred, for the remainder of their lives". Mahala ALLRED was the step daughter born about 1800 out of wedlock daughter of Sarah ALLRED. It is believed that Jacob died after 1840 per the U S Census. Joseph ROUTH is believed to be buried in the Sandy Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Mahala lived in the old home for several years until 1882. Sarah Allred was the daughter of John "Johnny" ALLRED and his second wife Margaret JULIAN, daughter of Isaac JULIAN and his wife Barbara WHITE.

Jacob ROUTH/RUTH Sr., his second wife Sarah ALLRED and her daughter Mahala ALLRED are found in the 1830 and 1840 US Census, Randolph County, North Carolina.

Dawnell Hatton GRIFFIN comments that her research indicated: "Both Jacob and Sarah ALLRED ROUTH died before the 1850 census was taken, but in 1850, Mahala ALLRED, age 55 was living alone. In 1860 she was listed as Mahalah ALLRED age 61 and in 1880 she was listed as "Milhala W. Allred" age 79. She never married." It appears per the 1870 U S Census that lists a single female keeping house as Marshal ALLRED born 1806 is a good candidate for Mahala ALLRED.

ALLRED genealogist and author Dawnell Hatton GRIFFIN further observes that: "When Mahala died in 1882 the court records stated that Mahala ALLRED had died intestate, that she died without issue "leaving neither brother or sister, father or mother." Two uncles were named, Joseph ALLRED and Jonathan ALLRED, both of whom were deceased but who married and had children in their lifetime. "At the time of her death the said intestate was seized in fee simple of one tract of land on Sandy Creek in Randolph County containing one hundred and twenty acres conveyed to her by Jacob ROUTH (recorded in Book 17 page 431.) The heirs of her uncles were listed and coincide with records that have been proven to be the children of Joseph and Jonathan ALLRED. Joseph had ten children. All of them lived to be old enough to marry, but one. Jonathan also had a large family of nine children.

The oldest real estate transaction on record by a Randolph County ROUTH is in Deed Book 3, page 316 at the Randolph County Register of Deeds Office. Jacob ROUTH purchased from his brother in law William FIELDS and his wife Charity YORK (sister to his first wife Martha "Mollie" YORK daughter of Henry YORK) 120 acres of land and appurtenances. This tract of land is described as being part of the original land grant (640 acres) from Earl Granville to "Semore YORK. The consideration was for "fifty pounds hard money". The deed was dated 20 June 1788".

Jacob ROUTH and both of his wives are believed to have been life long members of the Sandy Creek Baptist Church. Jacob ROUTH and his wife Martha "Mollie" YORK are buried in Row 8 of the cemetery at field rocks. Archeological probing in April 2016 by Franklin ALLRED and Dennis YORK confirmed the existence of properly spaced graves in line with the tombstone of Joel ROUTH his brother. These are believed to identify the grave sites of two ROUTH brothers, Joel and Jacob, who married two YORK sisters, Mary Ruth "Polly" and Martha "Mollie"; daughters of Henry YORK and his first wife Eve Dorthy WEIR.

His grave site is believed to be in row 8 and plot 7 which was discovered at a field rock in April 2016 by Franklin ALLRED and Dennis YORK. Both men are cousins and long time friends who were trained by the the North Carolina State Archeologist how to respectfully use archeological probes to determine colonial era grave sites.

The ten children of Jacob ROUTH and his first wife Martha "Mollie" YORK are:

1. Eleanor ROUTH, b. 1769 NC; d. 1860 Collin County, Texas. 2. McClusky ROUTH, b. 1770 NC; d. 3. Isaac ROUTH, b. 1772 NC; d. 1850 TN 4. Jeremiah ROUTH, b. 1778 NC; d. 1860 IN 5. Aaron ROUTH, b. 1783 NC; d. 1866 NC 6. Joshua ROUTH, b. 1786 NC; d. 1872 NC 7. Esther ROUTH, b. 1786 NC; d. 8. Zacheus ROUTH, b. 1788 NC; d. 1850 MO 9. Martha Matilda ROUTH, b. 1789 NC; d. 1868 NC 10. Jacob ROUTH, Jr., b. 1795; d. 1870 NC

Under the leadership of Lynn Routh in September 2018, the Sandy Creek Baptist Church authorized and funded new historic memorials for six pioneer colonial original members of the church. Authorization included the research, design and procurement of the six new footstones coordinated by York & Associates Family Histories, Inc. a 501c3 (pending) nonprofit. A future installation in 2019 with milder weather was the plan. Genealogist and Family Historian Dennis York researched and designed these memorial stones. In the fall of 2018, Franklin Allred built six wooden forms for pouring concrete bases for each memorial stone with donated materials and labor for the project. Lynn Routh, Chairman of the Cemetery committee, facilitated the project activities. On Friday 10 May 2019, Dennis York, Son Mark York and John York, brother of Dennis York traveled by American Airlines from the Dallas, Texas area to install the six new memorial stones. This project was a donation to the Sandy Creek Baptist as a labor of love in respect and appreciation for Colonial founders’ of the church. Labor, truck deliveries and tools for the installation was successful with the aid of Lynn Routh, Franklin Allred and Terry Jones working together with the York men from Dallas as a testimony to team work on a very tight schedule. On Saturday 11 May 2019, cousins visited and enjoyed a delicious banquet style luncheon provided by the members of the Sandy Creek Baptist Church. During the luncheon, a genealogical account presentation of the ancestry for the individuals honored by their memorial stone. This familiarized attendees for the following dedication service in the cemetery. Rev Travis Brock made remarks and conducted the dedication service of these six original church members. These colonial Routh and York members settled in this Sandy Creek community over 250 years ago in about 1755-1760. A group of Routh and York descendants attended the event under cloudy skies with very light showers under two tents provided by Terry and Paula York. Tours of the Primitive Baptist Sandy Creek 1802 log cabin on a nearby hill completed this historic service.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Aug 26 2020, 17:19:35 UTC
