About Jacob Simmons, Jr.

From The Cousins Book, by Jan Simmons Johnson: Sometime between 1730 or 1740 Jacob Simon left Germany and came to the American Colonies and settled in Pennsylvania. He and his brother were not interested in the Feudal war between two German Provinces and they left their home along the Rhine River, in Braveria and came to the colonies. Jacob lived and owned properiy in both Brathwright and York counties. He served seven years at the hewers trade in Germany. After arriving in Pennsylvania, he married and had ten children, when his first wife died, he married the widow, Margrett Saylor, who also had ten children. Together they had four sons; Adam, Phillip, and twins, Christian and John. Jacob was a man of some means, as he owned property in two counties. When he left Pennsylvania he had given most, if not all, of his children a good start. He still owned some land in Pennsylvania. Jacob moved Margrett and their four sons to Botetort Co., Virginia in 1788. He bought the 230 acre, Woodsdale farm, on Looney's Mill Creek, from James & Andrew Wood, heirs of the late Andrew Wood.

Jacob lived in the old block house with his son, John. He had given his other three sons their homes. He brought with him a good sum of money( 500 pounds cash), and paid cash for the Woodsdale farm. He hewed logs and built a 20 X 56 foot log barn with sheds on both sides and ends.
Jacob was the first person burried in the Simmons graveyard, located on Route 11 in the Mill Creek area of Botetort Co., VA. He did not want to be burried in the Irish graveyard, with the Irish. Adam Simmons died a bachelor, Christian moved to Hawkins Co., Tennessee and Phillip moved to Ohio. _____________________________________________________________________________________________ I believe that this listing of passengers on the "Charming Nancy" arriving in Philadelphia on Nov. 9,1738 could be our Simon (Semen) brothers. The boat brought several families from the Alsace-Lorraine area, which is along the headwaters of the Rhine in Germany. The ship had three lists of passengers, 2A, 2B & 2C. Johan Adam and Jacob's last name is spelled different on each. It is spelled Semen on 2A, Ziman on 2B and Simon on 2C. http://www.palproject.org/pa/1738cnan.htm "At the Court House of Philiadelphia, November 9th, 1738.
